My Tasting Notes

This section will include my personal tasting notes and scores.  It will include tasting notes from social gatherings as well as trade tastings.  Readers should be aware that many of the tasting notes will have been affected by the four factors affecting the quality of all wine:
1. Where you are.
2. Who you're with.
3. What you're eating and
4. Who's paying for it!!

Sassicaia Tasting Notes

A fantastic tasting held by the UK agents for Tenuta San Guido and hosted by winemaker Dr Sebastiano Rosa on the 16th of February.

Sassicaia 2007

Mid to deep ruby. Sweet licorice and cassis aromas - very pure and a result of the combination of the warm days and cool nights during the gowing season. Sweet attack, moderate weight, lovely soft tannins. Lovely balance and elegance. A very nice style of Sassicaia akin to the 2004. 2015 to 2030.

Sassicaia 2006

Very deep colour. Big and bold spicy cassis as well as exotic fruit. Big, ripe fruit and chewy tannins. Good development of flavours on the palate and serious structure. Long warm finish. This is a larger-scaled Sassicaia along the lines of the 1998 and hopefull it develops as well as the 1998. 2017 to 2040+.

Sassicaia 2004

The 2004 was a warm vintage but again combined with cool nights like in 2007. The nose is more elegant and fragrant than the 2006 with redcurrant notes - very charming. Vibrant, fresh, mouth-watering fruit with rip fruit and tannins - delicious! Approachable now but will improve. Now to 2025.

Sassicaia 2001

Very dark ruby colour. Quite closed on the nose but concentrated and pure with cassis and earthy notes - very promising. Full bodied with firm tannins and excellent depth of fruit. Needs a bit of time but should be excellent in a few years. Drink 2013 to 2030.

Sassicaia 1998

Mid garnet colour with an open, obvious Cabernet capsicum character on the nose, with a lovely mix of raspberry liqueur, flowers and raw meat - very complex. Velvety, ripe but evident tannins with tobacco/coffee coming through on the palate. Superb mouth feel and texture with excellent length. An absolute beauty!  Drink now to 2030.

Sassicaia 1995

Intriguing nose of game, earthiness with some sweet macerated raisins, molasses and hint minerality. Savoury with stony/mineral character and slightly dusty tannins. Nicely subtle and a less structure style of Sassicaia to drink over the relatively short term.   Drink now to 2016.

Sassicaia 1990

Sweet and pleasant nose of strawberry and menthol. One of least complex on the nose from this tasting. Soft, smooth style with lovely balance.  On the one hands it seems to need time to develop complexity but on the other hand there is a slight dryness on the finish which hints at drinking up. I would suggest drinking these over the next few years as I doubt it will get much better and the dryness will get worse. Drink now to 2017.

Sassicaia 1988

Classic, pure, restrained nose of top-class Bordeaux with cedar and cassis. Still so fresh and pure after all these years. Solid, crisp but with bold, high toned cassis fruit and savoury. Great class and focus with great development of flavours on the palate. Excellent length. A very regal Sassicaia! Drink now to 2025.

Sassicaia 1985

Very deep, still opaque colour. Amazingly youthful still with open and concentrated notes of sweet cassis, capsicum at first changing to black fruit and liquorice and tar. Full bodied with a seamless balance and brilliant soft tannins. Superb length and flavour. Almost over the top but not. Difficult to find a fault in such a great wine that gives so much pleasure. Drink now to 2040+

Sassicaia 1982

Mid garnet colour with a very fragrant nose of menthol, anise and tobacco. Feminine in style with a candied freshness. Lovely flavours on the palate of herbal tea, anise and Morello cherries. Medium weight and a touch dry on the finish but still delicious. Drink now to 2018

Sassicaia 1978

Light mahogany colour and showing its age. A touch oxidised with notes of Christmas cake, mushroom and Asian spice. Flavoursome but alcohol overly evident and just keeping it together. A fading star! Drink now.

Still dark colour. Warming winter nose of dark chocolate, tobacco, florentines and black cherries. Excellent balance with flavours of dried fruit, figs, spices (nutmeg) and dates. Good sweetness and firm tannins. Fantastic wine from a great Tuscan vintage. Drink now to 2020. Drink now.
